KABOCHA PIE WORKSHOP with Kabocha Bread Tasting

Join our workshop to learn how to make delicious Kabocha Squash Pie using freshly steamed cooked Kabocha squash, and also taste a Kabocha Bread!

  • Kabocha Squash Pie: Demonstration, hands-on activity & one finished product to take home.

  • Kabocha Bread: Demonstration &  tasting

Each student will take home the finished Kabocha Squash Pie from the hands-on activity. This pie is a custard based pie. For food safety reasons, please bring a cooler box with ice pads that fits a pie box provided by the workshop.The size of the pie box is  8”x8”x h2.5”. 

STEP 1: DEMONSTRATION (CUSTARD FILLING)

Demonstration by the instructor begins with preparing the Kabocha: learn how to cut, steam, and make it into a paste. Then make Kabocha custard filling, and finish by pouring the filling into a prebaked pie dough.

STEP 2: HANDS-ON

Students will participate in a hands-on activity in pairs to make the Kabocha paste and the Kabocha custard filling, which will then be poured into the pre-baked pie dough. While the student's pies are in the oven, the instructor will continue the demonstration.

STEP 3: DEMONSTRATION (PIE DOUGH)

The students will watch the process of making the dough from scratch: how to mix, rest, and roll out the dough. The instructor will then line the pie pan and blind-bake the pie. The instructor will invite you to touch or feel the texture during the process.

STEP 4: DEMONSTRATION of KABOCHA SQUASH BREAD

The students will watch how to bake a Kabocha Bread using the Kabocha squash paste and brown butter recipe. Students will also see how to decorate a simple loaf, making it suitable for a gift.

STEP 5: TASTING AND Q&A TIME

Tasting of a plated Kabocha squash pie & bread prepared by the instructor and served with tea.This will also be the time to review the baking process and ask any more questions you may have.

KABOCHA PIE Workshop Overview

Workshop hours:  9 am to 12 pm  (3 hours)

Class size: 1 to 4 students

Price: $200 per person

What students will receive: Hands-on finished items by students. We will provide you a 8x8x h 2.5 pie box to pack your Kabocha Squash pie.

What to bring: Please bring a cooler box with ice pads that fits a pie box provided by the workshop (pie box size: 8”x8”x h2.5”), an apron, hand towel, indoor shoes with closed toes & soft soles, and a pen to take notes. (We will have water bottles for you but you are welcome to bring your own beverage ).

Waiver Form: Each student participating in the workshop is required to sign a waiver form. This form will be sent in the confirmation email. Once signed and submitted, it will automatically be sent to Fuyuko's Kitchen.
If you have any trouble signing digitally, we will have a hard copy available for you to sign at the class before we begin the workshop. (You will be required to sign either way to participate in the class.)
